Dr. Elizabeth Congdon is an Associate Professor at Bethune-Cookman University, an HBCU in Daytona Beach, FL. She is also the founder and President of BEC Research, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to increasing diversity in STEM through research and education.
Dr. Congdon received her doctorate in ecology from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2007 with research conducted in Venezuela on behavior and conservation of capybaras – the world’s largest species of rodent. Her early career experience included teaching at Georgia Southern University and serving as the Research Director of the Moka Wildlife Center on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea.
Since 2018 Dr. Congdon has shifted focus from field research to applied behavior dedicated to increasing the health and wellness of shelter dogs. Her ultimate goal is to increase adoption rates in difficult-to-adopt dogs through data-based enrichment strategies.
BEC Research, Inc is a non-profit organization devoted to improving the planet for animals and people through education and research.
Our overarching goal is to increase diversity and inclusion in the fields of behavior, conservation and sustainability science using accessible and engaging research programs to attract students from all academic disciplines.
Currently, the largest research and outreach program is focused on improving the health and wellness and shelter animals with data-based approaches to enrichment.
